About me

Sarah Jane Nicholls - Yorkshire artist and painter

Yorkshire Artist & Painter

Since moving to Yorkshire from London in 2008, I’ve been continually inspired by the beauty of the surrounding countryside — especially the ever-changing colours and textures of the trees throughout the seasons.

Painting trees and landscapes has become a central focus of my work, capturing both their detail and atmosphere. Alongside this, I’ve also explored a series of vibrant abstract pieces on glass through commissions — a process I’ve thoroughly enjoyed for its freedom and bold expression.

I’ve been painting for most of my life, and over the past few years, I’ve proudly turned what began as a passion into a full-time career. I am self-taught, having developed my style and techniques through experimentation, curiosity, and a great deal of practice.

Much of my work is created on glass or acrylic. This unique process requires careful planning and precision, as each piece is painted in reverse — beginning with the finest foreground details and building layers backwards to create depth and clarity.

I work from my home studio in Collingham, near Wetherby in West Yorkshire, often accompanied by my loyal (and occasionally mischievous) Cockapoo, Dougie.

How I paint

Glass painting is a rewarding yet challenging process. First, everything is painted in reverse starting with what is in the foreground then layering from behind. I often have to paint the first layer two to three times to provide a solid base. This layered painting makes sure the foreground is thick enough for the next layer of paint to not show through.

In this picture for example, every branch was painted three times to make sure the branches maintained their structure before the blue sky was painted on top

My painting style

I love painting in vivid colours that create depth and emotion. More of my more recent work incorporates a ‘pointillist’ style in which I paint by layering thousands and thousands of dots on top of each other. This style helps bring my landscapes to life, especially paintings of trees or beautiful wild flower meadows.

I have also developed a painting technique where I paint onto sheets of glass or acrylic (rather than a canvas) which creates very bold colours and 3D effects through the various layers and shadows. Painting on glass adds an extra challenge to my painting process as it requires me to create the piece in reverse.

My paint palette is usually full of bright contrasting colours — the brighter the better, in my opinion!
